Recently 4.1: WebP / AVIF Support (Plus Some Minor Improvements)

This release fixes a couple of minor issues found while testing Recently under WordPress 6.7.1, plus adds WebP/AVIF support

New Year, new plugin release!

Recently 4.1 is mostly a maintenance release as there are no new features – except for WebP / AVIF support that is.

WebP / AVIF Support

WebP and AVIF have been two of the most popular image formats for the web for the past couple of years due to their ability to serve high quality images at a lower size when compared to more traditional formats such as JPG and PNG.

This release gives your Recently posts list the ability to render .webp / .avif images as post thumbnails, helping reduce the overall page load times while maintaining a good image quality.

By default the plugin will continue to serve thumbnails in their original format(s). To use either .webp or .avif please head to Settings > Recently > Tools > Thumbnails, select your preferred format and click on Apply to save changes.

Please note that:

  1. Your site must be using at least WordPress 5.8 in order to be able to create .webp images
  2. Your site must be using at least WordPress 6.5 in order to be able to create .avif images
  3. Your web server’s image library (Imagick and/or GD) supports at least one of these formats

That’s all for now!
